This is a call to action, use this brutal abuse of the democratic process to fight back!
The useful thing to do today, about Sopa/PIPA is to figure out how to stop next time. MPAA is calling this a stunt. They will be back, their livelihood is based on abusing the legal system, to protect their broken business model. Its easier for them to buy twenty congressmen than to fix their business model.
Here’s what needs to happen:
Monthly protest days: “Buy nothing/IP day.”
- Buy no commercial “Intellectual Property” say, every 2nd Friday of the month.
- Don’t buy itunes, Netflix, don’t buy a CD at the store(Seriously people still do that?).
- Don’t by that Disney DVD for you kids or nieces/nephews.
- Don’t by that new computer game release, on release day.
- Don’t listen to music at a club, that pays royalties to the music collections societies.
- Buy no books/ebooks/audiobooks.
Schedule mass action on days before earnings calls, hit the executives where they live (in their stock options). If you have the money, short sell the stock of these companies at key times. No books published after 1923 will be entering the public domain, no books in the US will enter the public domain until after 2019, my nieces and nephews will graduating high school before, they can freely use the works of authors dead a century before they were born.
- Demand corporate executive accountability for any DMCA type actions. (DMCA copyright take down notices require a signed statement under penalty of perjury, yet media companies routinely falsify these statements to suppress dissent.)This has been shown to work with Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) “Section 302 requires that the company’s “principal officers” (typically the Chief Executive Officer and Chief Financial Officer) certify and approve the integrity of their company financial reports quarterly”
- Demand statutory penalties for false filing.
- Demand Fair use for end users, and removal of digital encryption locks.
- Demand Fair Dealing for the disabled.
- Demand reasonable copyright limits and controls.
- Demand that copyright stop being extended. Reasonable copyright is 20 year, or the life of the author, not 120 years or the life of the author plus 70 years. Facts: No sound recordings will entry the public domain during your lifetime (http://copyright.cornell.edu/resources/publicdomain.cfm ~2067AD).
Turn this SOPA/PIPA debacle around, demand *our* rights, guaranteed under the constitution.
Steal this rant, republish it, polish it, act on it. They will not stop, why should we.
